There’s a moment when everything feels unclear—when trauma, stress, or past experiences make it hard to see the next step forward. You may feel disconnected from yourself, unsure of what’s right or what path to take. But if you’re here reading this, chances are, something within you is stirring—an inkling, a curiosity. And that curiosity? It’s more powerful than you realize. In fact, curiosity is your resilience.
When I began my own journey of self-connection, I didn’t always have the answers. I wasn’t sure what was exactly right for me, but I knew there had to be more than what traditional routes were offering. I let my curiosity guide me—toward exploring new approaches, understanding my nervous system, and ultimately, transforming my life. That curiosity became my resilience, and it can be yours, too.
The Science of Curiosity: Why It’s So Powerful
Research shows that curiosity is closely tied to psychological well-being and resilience. According to studies, curiosity triggers the release of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that plays a key role in motivation and pleasure. When we allow ourselves to be curious, we engage in learning and exploring—two things that make us more adaptable and better equipped to handle stress and uncertainty.
Psychologist Dr. Todd Kashdan, a leading expert on curiosity, explains: “Curiosity is the engine of growth. It’s what pushes us forward to explore, learn, and become stronger versions of ourselves.” By embracing your curiosity, you’re building emotional resilience—a crucial component in healing from trauma or navigating life’s challenges.
Curiosity is Self-Love and Self-Trust
You might not feel fully grounded in self-trust right now, and that’s okay. Curiosity is the doorway to building that trust. Every time you ask a question, every time you explore a new tool or try to understand your own body’s signals, you’re showing yourself love. You’re saying: I care enough to keep exploring, to keep showing up, even if I don’t have all the answers yet.
In somatic work, we focus on reconnecting to the body—bringing awareness to what’s happening inside. One of the most effective ways to do this is by staying curious. When you’re feeling stuck or overwhelmed, you might not be able to name exactly what’s happening inside you, but with curiosity, you can start to explore the edges of those feelings without diving too deep, too fast. This process can gently open up a new connection with your body and emotions, building resilience and self-trust in the process.
Somatic Tools to Nourish Your Curiosity
Somatic practices offer powerful ways to use curiosity as a tool for healing. Titration and pendulation are two techniques I often use in my practice to help clients approach their emotions and bodily sensations in small, manageable pieces.
Titration: This involves working with small, manageable doses of intense emotions or sensations. Rather than diving into deep discomfort, we take it in small sips, allowing your nervous system to integrate the experience slowly and safely.
Pendulation: This technique allows you to gently move between a sense of safety and discomfort. By “pendulating” between the two, you expand your capacity for resilience without overwhelming yourself.
These somatic techniques teach us that we don’t need to dive deep into everything all at once. Instead, we can work the edges, using curiosity to explore gently and gradually. This approach is safe, empowering, and leads to powerful transformation over time.
Trust the Path of Curiosity
As you move through your healing journey, I invite you to embrace curiosity as a form of self-love and resilience. You don’t need to have all the answers. You don’t need to know what’s exactly right. But you do need to trust that your curiosity will guide you to the next step.
Whether it’s exploring new modalities, questioning old patterns, or simply noticing how your body feels in this moment, curiosity is an act of deep self-compassion. It is the key to building the resilience needed for lasting healing and self-trust.
